Plywood is a versatile, durable wood-based product created by adhesively bonding an odd number of thin sheets of wood, called veneers, in layers. This is a key process that gives plywood its unique properties.
Veneers are laid in a cross-grain pattern—such that the direction of the wood fibers in successive layers is perpendicular. This specific arrangement, combined with an appropriately chosen adhesive, is pressed in multi-level hydraulic presses under high temperature and pressure. Such an organized production process guarantees a homogeneous bond across the entire cross-section of the panel.
Depending on the binder used, we can distinguish between waterproof plywood (bonded with phenolic or melamine resins) and dry-durable plywood (bonded with urea-formaldehyde adhesives).
Thanks to its complex, cross-laminated structure, plywood is one of the most durable construction materials available on the market. It is characterized by:
- • High resistance to bending and cracking,
- • Low reaction to moisture (especially in the case of waterproof plywood),
- • Dimensional stability compared to solid wood.
As a result of further processing and finishing (filming, HPL lining, or natural veneers), specialized varieties are created, such as formwork plywood, anti-slip plywood, or veneered plywood.
